How to Install and Configure K-Lite Codec Pack Full (Step-by-Step)
K-Lite Codec Pack Full provides a comprehensive set of codecs, filters, and tools to ensure your Windows PC can play almost any audio or video file. This guide walks you through downloading, installing, and configuring the Full edition so playback and subtitle behavior are reliable and optimized.
Before you start — quick checklist
- OS: Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11 (64-bit recommended).
- Backup: Close media players and, if you have other codec packs installed, uninstall them first to avoid conflicts.
- Installer source: Download only from the official site (codecguide.com) or a trusted mirror.
Step 1 — Download the Full edition
- Open your browser and go to the official K-Lite Codec Pack page (codecguide.com).
- Locate the “Downloads” section and choose K-Lite Codec Pack Full.
- Download the installer file to your PC.
Step 2 — Run the installer
- Double-click the downloaded installer executable.
- If Windows shows a SmartScreen or UAC prompt, choose Run / Yes to continue.
Step 3 — Choose installation mode
- The installer offers modes such as Normal, Expert, and Simple.
- Normal is suitable for most users.
- Expert lets you fine-tune codecs, splitters, and filters.
- Select Normal unless you need specific customizations, then click Next.
Step 4 — Select components
- In Normal mode, default recommended components are preselected (including LAV Filters, xy-VSFilter, and Media Player Classic).
- If in Expert mode, you’ll see detailed component lists:
- Decoders: LAV Video, LAV Audio (recommended).
- Splitters: LAV Splitter.
- Subtitle renderer: xy-VSFilter or madVR (if available).
- Tools: MediaInfo Lite, GraphStudioNext (optional).
- Keep default selections unless you have a specific requirement, then click Next.
Step 5 — Configure file associations
- The installer will ask which media file types to associate with Media Player Classic (MPC-HC).
- Common choices to select: .mp4, .mkv, .avi, .m2ts, .flv, .mov, .mp3, .aac, .flac.
- Select the extensions you want MPC-HC to open by default, then click Next.
Step 6 — Choose preferred decoders and renderers
- You’ll be presented with options for video and audio decoders and renderers:
- Video decoder: LAV Video is generally the best choice.
- Audio decoder: LAV Audio for broad format support.
- Subtitle rendering: xy-VSFilter for compatibility; madVR for higher-quality video rendering if you know what you’re doing.
- Select recommended options and click Next.
Step 7 — Configure advanced settings (optional)
- If using Expert mode, review advanced settings:
- Hardware acceleration: Enable DXVA2 or D3D11 deinterlacing if your GPU supports it (improves performance).
- Bitstreaming: For passthrough of Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD to an AV receiver, enable passthrough in the audio settings.
- Resampler and audio renderer: Use default settings unless you require special audio routing.
- Click Next to proceed.
Step 8 — Complete installation
- Click Install and wait; this typically takes a few minutes.
- When finished, you can choose to launch Media Player Classic or open the Codec Tweak Tool for further tuning. Click Finish.
Step 9 — Verify playback and tweak settings
- Open Media Player Classic (MPC-HC).
- Play sample files: one H.264/HEVC .mp4, one .mkv with subtitles, and one audio-only file (e.g., .flac).
- If video stutters or colors look off:
- In MPC-HC, go to View → Options → Playback → Output and switch video renderer (e.g., EVR-Custom, madVR, or Enhanced Video Renderer).
- If subtitles don’t display correctly:
- In MPC-HC, go to View → Options → Subtitles and choose your renderer (e.g., VSFilter/xy-VSFilter). Adjust font, encoding, and subtitle position.
- For audio issues, open Options → Internal Filters or External Filters in MPC-HC and ensure LAV Audio is enabled.
Step 10 — Use Codec Tweak Tool for troubleshooting
- Open Codec Tweak Tool from the K-Lite group in Start Menu.
- Use it to:
- Reset all registrations.
- Disable problematic splitters/decoders.
- Rebuild the DirectShow filter cache.
Quick tips

- If you prefer a lightweight setup, consider the Standard or Basic editions.
